日本の言葉に冗談があるように英語にも”joke”があります。英語のジョークにはユーモア溢れる優れたものが多いですが、なかにはやっぱり、寒い親父ギャグのようなジョークもあります。
今回、英語版の親父ギャグを集めてみました。あなたはなぜこれがおもしろいのかわかるでしょうか？
- Two peanuts walk into a bar, and one was a salted.
- A dyslexic man walks into a bra.
- An invisible man marries an invisible woman. The kids were nothing to look at either.
- Two cannibals are eating a clown. One says to the other: “Does this taste funny to you?”
- Two antennas met on a roof, fell in love and got married. The ceremony wasn’t much, but the reception was excellent.
1. Two peanuts walk into a bar, and one was a salted.
(2つのピーナッツがバーに行った。そのうち、１人は襲われた。)
a salted（塩味の）とassaultedがかかっているわけです。
2. A dyslexic man walks into a bra.
(質読症患者がバーに行った。)
質読書患者は字が読めない障害なので、BARをBRAと読んでしまったというオチです。
3. An invisible man marries an invisible woman. The kids were nothing to look at either.
（透明人間のカップルが結婚したが、そのこどもたちは顔がよくなかった。）
これは”Nothing to look at”の見ばえがしないという意味と、透明人間だから誰にも見えないという意味がかかっているんですね。
4. Two cannibals are eating a clown. One says to the other: “Does this taste funny to you?
（ふたりの人食いがピエロを食べていた。ひとりがもうひとりに言った。「こいつ、おかしな味がしないかい？」）
ピエロは道化師なので、面白いことをして人をおかしがらせるのが仕事ですが、その部分とおかしな味がするという部分がかかっているのです。
5. Two antennas met on a roof, fell in love and got married. The ceremony wasn’t much, but the reception was excellent.
（屋根の上で、２本のアンテナが愛し合い結婚した。式はたいしたことはないが、披露宴は最高だった。）
アンテナの受信の”Reception”と披露宴の”Reception”がかかっているのです。
いかがでしたか？ジョークは言葉遊びの一種なので、文章にすると面白さがなかなか伝わりにくいものですが、よくよく考えてみると面白さがわかってくるはずです。
